To expedite roll out of the 5G network in Kerala, the state government has constituted a task force under Additional Chief Secretary to oversee the preparations for 5G roll out.
Officials said an order has been issued by the state government on October 28 constituting a nine-member task force for the smooth implementation of 5G services in the state. The order said the task force will also finalise the 5G leadership package and shall suggest the required modifications in the present telecom policy wherever necessary.
As per the order, the Additional Chief Secretary (Electronics and Information Technology Department) will be the chairman of the task force. Kerala government is targeting a major digital push to its different e-services with the roll out of 5G network by telecom operators in the state.
Though the 5G network was launched in other main cities in India in October 2022, no city from Kerala figured in the list. According to the Department of Telecommunications (DoT, only13 cities – Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Chandigarh, Gandhinagar, Gurugram, Hyderabad, Jamnagar, Kolkata, Chennai, Lucknow, Pune, Delhi and Mumbai have 5 G network services.
Airtel and Jio are the major telecom companies rolling out the 5 G network in a phased manner in select places in the country. While Jio started providing the 5G services in four cities – Mumbai, Delhi, Varanasi, and Kolkata–, Airtel is offering 5G in Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Siliguri, Nagpur and Varanasi.
