Kerala is opening up big opportunity for drone technology to enhance efficiency in the marine fisheries and farming sectors. Kerala has decided to adopt drone technology to boost productivity and streamline critical activities, positioning the state at the forefront of modernised fisheries management in India.

According to senior government officials, drones will now play a pivotal role in locating fish in the sea, providing real-time data to fishermen and reducing unnecessary fuel consumption. By identifying fish shoals accurately, this technology promises to increase catch efficiency while minimising environmental impact.

“Beyond fish detection, drones are set to revolutionise other marine-related activities, mainly cage fish farming. Drones will be used for aerial surveillance of cage farms, enabling farmers to monitor the cages for maintenance needs, feed management, and security without the need for extensive manual effort,” said a senior officer.

An official release said the drones will also be deployed to monitor marine mammals, ensuring their conservation and reducing accidental entanglements in fishing nets. These unmanned aerial vehicles will also assist in disaster management by providing rapid assessments of affected coastal areas during cyclones or tsunamis.

Fuselage Innovations Managing Director Devan Chandrasekharan said the Kerala government’s decision to embrace drones would definitely boost the confidence of companies that operate in the drone technology sector. “By integrating drones into these critical areas, the state is creating significant opportunities for technological advancement and sustainable development,” he said. Fuselage Innovations is Kerala’s first startup company that has used drone technology in farming.

Officials said the government plans to train local fishermen and fisheries officers in operating drones, ensuring inclusive participation and skill development in the community. Already, the adoption of drones in farming has revolutionised agricultural practices in the state. From spraying pesticides and fertilisers to monitoring crop health, drones have significantly improved productivity while reducing manual labour.

“By embracing drone technology, Kerala is not only modernising its key sectors but also creating a fertile ground for tech startups and drone manufacturers. This decision will position Kerala as a hub for drone technology applications, attracting investment and fostering innovation,” Devan added.
