Government rest houses in Kerala have emerged as a preferred accommodation choice for travellers. Yes, since opening of 156 government rest houses for the public in November, 2021, over three lakh bookings were made enabling the government to earn a revenue of Rs 183.3 crore.

As per an official data, the People’s Rest House initiative that offers affordable accommodations across Kerala, has recorded 30,41,77 bookings in 156 rest houses across the state over three years, bringing in revenue of Rs 183.3 crore.

“The initiative currently offers 1,200 rooms, including cottages, with an additional 256 rooms under construction. New facilities, like 55 rooms in Guruvayur and 39 rooms in Thaikkad, are set to open next year. Key rest houses in tourist hubs and major centers have been renovated, with new constructions enhancing Kerala’s hospitality infrastructure. Rest houses in Fort Kochi, Ponmudi, Palakkad Thrithala, Wayanad Meppadi, and Kannur Mattannur are also being upgraded,” said a senior government officer.

After rebranding as “People’s Rest Houses”, the revenue touched ₹40.15 crore giving more confidence to the government to invest further in expanding the facilities. “Key rest houses in popular tourist destinations like Fort Kochi, Ponmudi,  Thrithala, Meppadi, and Mattannur are being renovated or newly constructed to enhance infrastructure and cater to growing demand. These developments are pivotal in making Kerala a more accessible and affordable destination for tourists.”

Rebranding the rest houses as “People’s Rest Houses” has helped attract a diverse group of travellers, from families to solo adventurers, who value quality accommodations without high costs.

Tourism experts believe the initiative will play a crucial role in boosting Kerala’s travel sector. With the rest houses strategically located in key tourist hubs and scenic spots, visitors are now more likely to explore less commercialised areas. “Affordable accommodations make it easier for travellers to extend their stays and explore Kerala’s hidden gems, which directly contributes to local economies,” said a tourism official.

Moreover, the expansion of facilities reflects the government’s commitment to strengthening Kerala’s tourism infrastructure. The rest houses not only provide comfortable stays but also offer travellers a chance to experience Kerala’s rich cultural and natural heritage. “With affordable lodging now more accessible than ever, the initiative aligns perfectly with Kerala’s vision of sustainable and inclusive tourism growth,” the official added.
