When it comes to waste management, Kochi Metro Rail Limited (KMRL) follows world-class and scientific systems to ensure zero pollution. Yes, even the toilet waste from the stations of Kochi Metro Rail and Water Metro is scientifically processed using Bio-Digesters to prevent pollution.
Instead of opting for conventional septic tanks, Kochi Metro has installed Bio-Digesters at all Kochi Metro stations to treat human waste after partnering with Samudra Planet, a Kerala startup that uses the advanced anaerobic technology developed by Defence Research Development Organisation (DRDO) under a technology transfer agreement.
The bio-digester technology, rooted in anaerobic bacterial processes, effectively decomposes human waste into pathogen-free and odourless water, significantly reducing environmental impact and promoting water conservation.
“Our bio-digesters are designed to offer a scientific, eco-friendly solution for waste treatment. By eliminating conventional septic tanks, we are not only reducing the risk of groundwater contamination but also contributing to a cleaner, more sustainable urban environment,” said Samudra Planet Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Dr Jeevan Sudhakaran.
Unlike traditional septic systems that pose risks of leakage and groundwater pollution, the anaerobic bio-digesters require zero maintenance and ensure lifelong durability. The technology works by using specially cultured anaerobic bacteria that break down human waste, converting it into non-toxic by-products without emitting foul odours.
“It was Metroman E Sreedharan who recommended bio-digesters for the Kochi metro stations. Our bio-digesters have been doing their job 100 per cent since their installation at all the stations of Kochi Metro,” Dr Jeevan said, adding that sustainability has always been at the core of Samudra Planet’s operations and Kochi Metro is an exemplary model of how urban infrastructure can incorporate sustainable practices without compromising on efficiency.
“Bio-Digesters are the best solution for cities that grapple with mounting sanitation challenges. The success of bio-digesters in Kochi Metro marks a milestone in sustainable infrastructure development,” Dr Jeevan added.
