Dr K K R Wariyar, a pioneer in paediatric care, passes away at 88

Dr K K Raghava Wariyar, a veteran paediatrician whose gentle touch and deep compassion brought healing to thousands of children, passed away on Sunday in Kochi at the age of 88 due to age-related illness, leaving behind an indelible mark in healthcare.

With a career spanning over five decades, Dr Wariyar was widely respected as a pioneer in paediatric care and a beacon of dedication in the medical fraternity.

Dr Wariyar began his medical journey after completing his higher studies in paediatrics from the prestigious Royal College of Physicians in London.

Known for his calm demeanour and deep empathy, he quickly earned a reputation not only for his clinical acumen but also for his ability to connect with children and their parents.

In 1979, together with his wife, Dr Santha Wariyar, a distinguished Obstetrician and Gynaecologist, he co-founded Lakshmi Hospital in Kochi with a mission to offer accessible, affordable, and quality healthcare to all. Over the years, the hospital grew into a respected multi-specialty centre, anchored by the couple’s unwavering commitment to ethical medicine and patient-centric care.

Dr Wariyar always remained rooted in the values of humility, service, and simplicity. Beyond his clinical work, Dr Wariyar was an inspiring mentor to many young doctors and a passionate advocate for child immunisation, nutrition, and preventive care.

Dr Wariyar’s legacy lives on in every smile of the children he healed and every life touched by his selfless service. His mortal remains will be kept at Lakshmi Hospital in Kochi until 9 PM on Sunday for the public to pay homage. The final rites will be performed on Monday, July 21, 2025 at 3 PM at Karukappilly Wariam in Kolenchery.

His memory will forever be cherished, and his contributions to the field of healthcare will continue to inspire generations to come.
