In a first, a jail in Kerala will start production of sanitary napkins and it will be sold under the brand name “Freedom Care” at a low price in the market. As per the official sources, the state prisons department has approved the napkin production unit at Ernakulam district jail.
“The unit is located within the women’s jail adjacent to the Chittethukara district jail in Kakkanad,” said the officials. The unit has been set up with a grant of Rs 12 lakh provided by Cochin Shipyard Limited under its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) fund. “This is the first time in the state that sanitary napkins are being manufactured in a jail. The napkins will be made by ten trained inmates of the women’s jail. The napkins will be given to the inmates for their use and it will also be launched in the market,” said an official statement.
The napkin branded as “Freedom Care” will be also made available in the market at a lower price than the napkins currently available in the market.
Ernakulam district jail has been in the forefront launching several products under the “Freedom” brand in the last few years. Already, ready-to-cook chapatis and packed biryanis under the “Freedom” are a hit. The Freedom Food Factory at Kakkanad District Jail makes food items such as chapatis, chicken biryani and vegetable biryani. These food items are sold in the local market at a much less price.
