Caravan tourism in Kerala is poised for a significant leap forward as three hybrid integrated caravan parks are being rolled out across the state. The first of these parks has officially opened in Malampuzha, Palakkad with two more slated to begin operations soon in Kochi and Ponmudi.
This initiative marks a crucial milestone in Kerala’s Caravan Tourism Policy, launched in 2021 in the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic. The policy aims to offer a new travel experience where tourists explore scenic destinations by day and unwind at secure and well-equipped caravan parks by night.
The newly inaugurated Kava Eco Camper and Caravan Park, a private venture developed under a public-private partnership model, spans 12.5 acres in the picturesque Kava village. Nestled near the Manthuruthy side of Malampuzha Dam, the park provides panoramic views and modern amenities to cater to the needs of caravan travellers.
Designed to ensure both comfort and security, the park can accommodate six caravans and six camper vans. Facilities include electric charging points for vehicles, a 24-hour coffee shop, high-speed internet, toilets, and 10 well-appointed rooms for guests. Security personnel and safe storage solutions are also part of the infrastructure, aligning with the quality standards mandated for such parks.
In addition to offering parking and long-stay facilities, the caravan parks are being developed in collaboration with caravan operators, thereby creating an ecosystem that supports both infrastructure and operations.
Saby Jose, director of Kerala Destinations Private Limited, said the Caravan tourism is set to redefine travel in Kerala by attracting a new segment of explorers—those seeking flexibility, privacy, and a deeper connection with nature. “If caravan parks could offer more than just parking, creating immersive travel experiences in scenic and offbeat destinations, it will definitely attract travellers who want to explore places at their own pace while enjoying modern comforts. This model aligns beautifully with Kerala’s focus on sustainable and responsible tourism, and we believe it will significantly contribute to local economies while showcasing the state’s natural and cultural richness in a whole new light,” he said.
With upcoming parks at Bolgatty Palace in Kochi and the hill station of Ponmudi, the state tourism department is optimistic that the hybrid integrated caravan parks will further revitalise tourism in Kerala, catering to evolving traveller preferences and promoting more tourism related investments.
