Gritty Kochi single mother builds life repairing, reselling home appliances

Bindu C N

Being a single mother is not easy. But 55-year-old Bindu C N of Kochi has defied all odds, showcasing immense courage in her journey to provide a better life for her children. What’s more, her true grit and determination helped her to become a successful entrepreneur running her own business in Kochi that repairs used washing machines and refrigerators and resells them at an affordable cost.

Bindu’s life is not one of privilege or luck but rather of sheer grit and determination. With no significant educational background to boast of, she took up the responsibility of being the sole provider for her daughters and now feels proud as a woman who embraced the responsibility with unwavering resolve. Both her daughters have completed their education and are now settled in their lives, working in prominent companies.

Recognising the need to make ends meet, Bindu embarked on a journey filled with uncertainty and challenges. She started working in a washing machine and refrigerator repairing firm for a few years. But soon, she realised that she needed to start something of her own to build a life for her and her daughters.

Armed with nothing but her determination and a desire to secure a brighter future for her family, she took a bold step and decided to set up the small second-hand appliances business “Second Sale” at her residence in Ambadimoola, Kakkanad in 2019.

“I used to work at a home appliances repair shop. I learned the mechanics about the appliances and the parts used in each model. With that knowledge in hand, I decided to start my own business that repairs damaged home appliances and sells them at an affordable cost to people,” Bindu told “Open Digest“. She poured her heart and soul into her business, working tirelessly to turn her vision into a reality.

“At first, it was difficult because there were no sales. But as time went by, more people found out about my firm, and business began to grow. I am happy that my family and I could sustain ourselves with my business,” she said. Bindu is now planning to expand her business by sourcing spare parts of washing machines and air conditioners and selling them at a reasonable price.

Her shop is now a popular destination for people in search of affordable appliances. Bindu’s small business serves as a testament to her indomitable spirit and unwavering resolve. Despite the odds stacked against her, she refused to be defined by her circumstances, proving that with courage and determination, anything is possible.

Bindu serves as an inspiration to all who dare to dream big and pursue their passions against all odds.
