Back in 1990 when the then Chief Minister E K Nayanar, who have been to Apple facility in US pitched the idea of Kerala having its own IT Park to host companies that are into software development, many were sceptical about the move. Much water has flown under the bridge ever since then, now Kerala’s IT sector stands tall as an epitome of success. The total IT exports from Kerala have almost doubled in the last six years. As per the latest data, the IT exports from Kerala rose to Rs 17,536 crore in 2022 compared to Rs 9,753 crore in 2016.
Kerala has now 1106 companies functioning in its IT Parks spread across different districts in the state with 1,35,288 employees. The major aspect of the 30 per cent revenue growth is that it happened when the world was reeling under Covid-induced crisis. Kerala currently has three major government run IT parks – Technopark in Thiruvananthapuram, Infopark in Kochi and Cyberpark in Kozhikode. Apart from these major parks, there are satellite parks in minor towns.
“Generally, there is an exponential growth in Kerala’s IT sector. There is a huge demand for IT space here. Many big companies want to invest in Kerala. So we need to create a good infrastructure. It is going on. Similarly, the future investments in Kerala will be at both government and private IT parks. So we are expecting robust growth in IT exports in future,” a report by The New Indian Express quoted Kerala IT Parks interim CEO Snehil Kumar Singh.
