We have been seeing surfers enjoying the water sport on the scenic beaches in Hollywood movies. Soon, the beaches in Kerala will also have all the facilities for surfing as Kerala tourism department has finalised a project to popularise beaches in the state as a surfing destination and introduce training facilities for those who want to learn surfing.
To begin with, Kozhikode District Tourism Promotion Council and YEW Youth Cooperative Society have started a Surfing Club named “Aventura” at Beypore. A training academy for adventure water tourism has also been started at Beypore Gotheeswaram Beach in collaboration with the Responsible Tourism Mission.
“The tourism department has initiated schemes to popularise water sports and activities. Professionals with international surfing licences will provide training to people,” said officials of the tourism department. An official statement said ten people were already given training on surfing. This is the first time in the state that surfing training and surfing facilities have been introduced for tourists.
An expert team will conduct a detailed survey to identify the beaches in the state where surfing can be introduced. All the required safety facilities will be put in place at these identified beaches for surfing and the department is finalising the modalities for implementing the project.
