Close on the heels of the first ship anchoring at Vizhinjam International Seaport, the Kerala government has expedited measures to set up a Seafood Park at Vizhinjam under Vizhinjam International Seaport Limited (VISL).
According to senior officials, the state government has sanctioned an amount of Rs 16.25 crore to VISL, out of which Rs two crore will be utilised for preparing a Detailed Project Report (DPR) on the Seafood Park aimed at enhancing the livelihood opportunities of the fishing community. Officials from the Fisheries and Ports Department said the Seafood Park is solely aimed at providing new job opportunities for the fishing community.
“The park is expected to come up on 25 acres of land specially allotted by VISL adjacent to the new fishing harbour. The Seafood Park will be a state-of-the-art facility with the latest technology for the storage and shipment of live, processed fish, and value-added fish products,” a senior official said.
Although there was some confusion regarding the seafood park project following an alleged land transaction between VISL and KINFRA, the government has put the controversies to rest and decided to move forward with the project to complete it soon.
“The seafood park is one of the main projects envisaged as part of the port city area development plan. The land required for the park has already been identified, and the proposed DPR will provide direction to VISL to take it forward and complete it by the time the port becomes fully operational,” the officials said.
