In the wake of Kerala producing milk more than required for the state’s daily consumption, Kerala Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation (Milma) has expedited the works on the mega milk powdering factory which is coming up at Moorkanad in Malappuram. The factory is set to become operational by April 2023.
Kerala government in coordination with Milma has decided to speed up the works and start production at the factory, which is being set up at a cost of Rs 53.93 crore, following a large volume of milk being taken from Kerala to Tamil Nadu and Karnataka for converting it to milk powder.
Minister for Animal Husbandry & Dairy Development J Chinchu Rani told the state assembly that the milk powder unit will be first of its kind in the state and it will convert excessive milk produced in the state to milk powder. “It is going to be Milma’s largest single project in the state,” the Minister said, adding that the milk production in Kerala has gone up in the last few years.
As per the data presented by her, daily milk production in the state has increased from 16.36 lakh litres in 2015 to 21.3 lakh litres in 2021. “We have registered a tremendous growth in milk production which is higher than the national average. During 2015-16, nearly 5.5 lakh litres of milk came to Kerala from outside. Now we have surplus milk which is being taken to other states,” the Minister said. Milma is also working on projects to introduce several value-added products in the state.
