Kerala has won another laurel for its quality healthcare system. The latest data of the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare shows that Kerala has the least number of tuberculosis cases in India.
As per the National TB report 2023 released by the Union Ministry, the number of tuberculosis cases in Kerala is at a rate of 67 per lakh people, which is significantly lower than the national average of 176.2 per lakh people. Delhi has the highest number of cases, with a rate of 546 per lakh people.
Tuberculosis was declared as a notifiable disease in India in 2012, and the latest figures show a 13 per cent increase in the number of cases across the country compared to 2021. The report states that 95.5 per cent of the people diagnosed with TB received treatment.
In Kerala, 23,388 cases were confirmed in 2022 in which 895 were children and 491 people from tribal areas.
Across the country, 1,35,734 children and 2,09,111 tribals were diagnosed with the disease. According to the officials, a special project launched by the state government in association with Kudumbashree in Idukki district resulted in a reduction in the number of TB cases in the district.
“The ‘Nalumani Pookkal’ project led by Kudumbashree in Idukki to eradicate tuberculosis has been recognised as the best model project for achieving this goal. The project aims to convey the message to every family through Kudumbashree members that tuberculosis can be treated and cured,” an official statement said.
In the report, Kerala is also ranked fifth in the country for its tuberculosis eradication activities, taking into account various factors. “The ranking reflects the state’s commitment and sustained efforts to eliminate tuberculosis,” the statement added.
