When Aquina Rose Mary, a ninth standard student of OLF High School at Kumbalangi, wrote a letter to Kerala PWD Minister P A Mohammed Riyas about the pathetic condition of M V Raman Road near her house, she had no idea that her letter would really make an impact.
The Minister, who received the letter, immediately contacted the Panchayath office and directed them to do the needful to repair the road. Though he expressed technical difficulty in releasing funds from PWD, he took up the matter with MLA K J Maxi, the elected representative of the area, and sought his help to get the road renovated using the MLA’s asset development fund. On Thursday when the renovated road was opened for the public, Aquina was one of the chief guests at the function along with the MLA.
Aquina was thankful to the Minister and the MLA because nearly 140 families were dependent on the particular road for daily commutation.
The road was reconstructed to a high standard by utilising Rs 60 lakh allocated from the MLA fund and the work was carried out by the engineering department of local self department. The engineers also ensured that new water supply lines were laid before the renovation of the road to prevent Kerala Water Authority digging up the new road for laying the pipelines.
