Kerala has come out with a major rehabilitation package to expedite land acquisition for the 623-km-long coastal highway project aimed at totally redefining the state’s tourism sector. The package will cater to people who own land and those who live in the coastal area with no land.

The government officials said the rehabilitation package has been crafted taking into account the unique circumstances of the people living in the coastal area. As per the latest official details, the package has been divided into two categories: those who possess title deeds and those who do not. For those who have title deeds, the value of their building will be evaluated at the time of acquisition and will be depreciated based on its age.

Additionally, compensation will be given to them as per the Land Acquisition Law. Furthermore, a depreciated value will also be granted to them as part of the special package. The total amount of compensation they will receive will be the sum of these three amounts. The price of the land will be determined based on the Land Acquisition Rules of 2013. Under the scheme, families who require rehabilitation will receive a 600 square feet flat or a one-time compensation of Rs 13 lakh. For those who do not possess a title deed, the compensation for their building value will be granted without any deductions for depreciation.

The coastal highway project comprises 52 stretches covering a distance of 623 km, passing through nine districts. Out of this, the Kerala Road Fund Board is responsible for constructing a 537 km road in 44 stretches. The financial sanction has been received for the acquisition of land to cover a distance of 415 km in 24 stretches.

The 14-meter-wide coastal highway will not only have a well-constructed road but also will have additional facilities such as bicycle tracks, charging stations for electric vehicles, restaurants and other amenities.
