Chances of winning a prize from Kerala lotteries are going to double as Kerala is further expanding prize list of its lotteries. Directorate of Kerala State Lotteries is looking to partner with individuals and startups to develop an innovative lottery draw machine to accommodate more numbers for enabling an expanded prize list.

The directorate has tied-up with Kerala Startup Mission to select an individual or startup which can come out with an innovative idea for modifying the current mechanical lottery draw machine.

As per an official document, the purpose for identifying the startup is to make a state-of-the-art lottery machine that can enhance the machine’s capacity to accommodate more numbers, enabling an expanded prize list while ensuring portability and maintaining transparency in the drawing process.

Being a sole operator of lottery in the state, Kerala government earned a total revenue of Rs 7,145 crore in the year 2021-22, making nearly Rs 560 crore in profit while reports suggest that the government has targeted a turnover of Rs 10,000 crore in 2024-25.

“Lotteries are a major revenue-generating activity in the state. The existing lottery draw machine has limitations in number capacity restricting variety of prize offerings. The department is looking to develop an innovative draw machine to offer more number of prizes to people,” said a senior officer.

According to the details outlined by Kerala Startup Mission, they are seeking proposals for enhancing the existing mechanical lottery draw machine to support a larger pool of numbers, thereby enabling a broader range of prize tiers and amounts. “The modified machine should retain mechanical design, prioritise portability, and ensure transparency and fairness in the drawing process,” the document said.

One of the major requirements is that the new machine must accommodate a larger number pool for expanded prize categories. “At present there is a single window showing 6 digits along with 2 alphabets and 18 windows showing 4 digits each. The Department would like to increase the 4-digit windows from 18 to 50. The machine must be portable and easily transportable for use in various locations, ensure the integrity of the draw process with provisions for security and prevention of tampering and should be user-friendly,” the document added.
