Kerala is developing a total digital interface to ensure safe and speedy blood distribution for needy patients in Kerala. The state is moving towards the establishment of a comprehensive online platform aimed at promoting rapid and secure blood distribution.
This new platform will not only enable authorities to trace the blood bags disbursed from the state’s blood banks but also monitor the real-time temperature of blood bags to ensure safe transportation while maintaining the prescribed temperature.
Officials have stated that the Kerala Development and Innovation Strategic Council (K-DISC), a government think-tank dedicated to advancing emerging technologies for the benefit of the people, has initiated the procedures for implementing the project and has invited Expressions of Interest (EOI) from eligible startups to develop the portal.
“The proposed project is designed to facilitate the smooth functioning of all blood collection centers and blood storage facilities in the state. The primary goals include establishing traceability of blood bags, maintaining the correct temperature from the donor to the recipient, focusing on safety and quality throughout the process, and digitising the workflow of blood banks and storage centers to make processes more efficient and transparent,” said a senior official.
As part of the project, 41 blood collection centers and 57 blood storage facilities in Kerala will be connected, and mobile blood bag temperature trackers will be installed in these facilities to monitor and maintain the correct storage conditions. The project will enable the authorities concerned to track all collection centers and storage facilities effectively.
The project will also feature a centralized application hosted at the State Data Center (SDC) and a citizen interaction portal. This portal will connect with voluntary donor apps and private hospital blood banks to share information about blood availability with citizens and collect donation requests securely and transparently. The project will ensure a readily available supply of matching blood types across all regions of Kerala.
