Kerala is establishing a state-of-the-art organ and tissue transplantation institute at Leprosy Hospital campus in Kozhikode to streamline the procedures for organ and tissue transplantations in the state and conduct more research in the field of tissue allografts.
As per an order issued by the state government, the institute will be set up in Kozhikode as a Centre of Excellence in the field. Health department officials said the government had issued the order on December 2 based on the outcome of a meeting of top health department officials chaired by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan.
“Initially, the institute will be set temporarily in a two acre land at Kozhikode Medical College campus. A fully fledged permanent campus of the institute will come up on 20 acres of land at the campus of Leprosy Hospital in Kozhikode,” the officials said.
The order said the Leprosy Hospital would be shifted to an alternate campus if the new institute required the entire stretch of the land. Dr Biju Pottakat, Professor, Department of Surgical Gastroenterology, Jawaharlal Institute of PostGraduate Medical Education and Research (JIPMER), Puducherry will be appointed as Special Officer of the institute.
The institute will coordinate with the National Organ and Tissue Transplant Organization (NOTTO) of the Union Ministry of Health. The government has decided to set up the institute based on a Rs 500 crore proposal submitted by Dr Pottakat before the government for setting up the institute with state-of-the-art facilities to enable transplant surgeries.
