Kochi will soon have a new international cricket stadium with Kerala Cricket Association (KCA) deciding to construct a new one within 30 kms of the city. The KCA on Saturday has come out with a public notice inviting Expression of Interest (EoI) for Purchase/Lease of Land for constructing an International cricket stadium with allied facilities in Ernakulam district.
As per the notice, Kerala Cricket Association ( KCA) has invited the EoI from genuine land owners having absolute title and exclusive possession of garden land free from all encumbrance. “Only direct responses or responses from authorised representatives of the landowners shall be entertained. The land is required for the purpose of constructing an International Cricket Stadium with allied facilities in Ernakulam district. The land required for the above purpose is to be garden land (purayidam) and the extent of land required for the purpose shall be 20 to 30 acres of a single compact block
The location of the land has to be within 30 kilometres from the Ernakulam city. The land shall be well connected and have at least 15 metres direct road access for easy traffic movement to national /state Highway. No portion of the proposed land shall be included in the data bank as paddy land or wet land etc.
The KCA has decided to go for a new stadium in Kochi as the earlier project to set up a stadium at EdaKochi ran into rough weather because the land identified for it belonged to wet land category and there were a lot of protests against it. Though KCA wasn’t ready to give up the Eda Kochi stadium project despite the ministry of environment and forests denying permission to reclaim the land, it’s now confirmed that the EdaKochi stadium project will not take off and the KCA has to look for alternative sites.
It was in 2005 that KCA purchased the land in Eda Kochi for the project. “We can’t continue using the Kaloor international stadium for cricket matches as the stadium is now fully a venue for football matches. The decision to look for new land in Ernakulam has been taken as there is still no clarity on getting approval for the Eda Kochi project,” said sources in KCA.
The KCA has mandated that the EoI for the new land should reach the Office of its Secretary on or before February 28, 2023.
