Six Malayalam movies we would love to see remastered for theatre release

Filmmakers today are using advanced technologies to remaster old movies so that they could release it again in theatres with much better visual appeal and sound. Our editorial team has picked six yesteryear blockbuster Malayalam movies which the current generation would love to watch if remastered for big screen.

In fact, the announcement of Mohanlal starrer 1995 movie ‘Spadikam’ re-release worldwide in 4K visual quality with Dolby Atmos sound has caught the attention of movie buffs and they look forward to similar such releases.

Here’s the list of movies we would love to see remastered and released in the near future.

Oru Vadakkan Veeragatha (1989)

Regarded as a classic in Indian cinema, Oru Vadakkan Veeragatha has won four National Film Awards – Best Actor (Mammootty), Best Screenplay (M T Vasudevan Nair), Best Production Design and Best Costume Design (P Krishnamoorthy) and eight Kerala State Film Awards. The film is based on a subplot of Vadakkan Pattukal, a medieval ballad from North Malabar. It depicts the story from the perspective of Chanthu, the protagonist played by Mammootty. The epic historical drama directed by Hariharan also stars Suresh Gopi, Balan K Nair, Captain Raju and Madhavi.

Rajavinte Makan (1986)

Rajavinte Makan was a major milestone in the Malayalam film industry and was instrumental in raising the stardom of Mohanlal. The protagonist, underworld don Vincent Gomas, played by Mohanlal, attained a cult status. His dialogues are still popular among today’s youth. Produced by Thampi Kannanthanam and written by Dennis Joseph, the gangster film tells the story of Vincent Gomas and his rivalry with Kerala Home Minister N. Krishnadas (Ratheesh). The movie also features Suresh Gopi, Ambika and Mohan Jose in supporting roles.

New Delhi (1987)

New Delhi is regarded as one of the best movies in Mammootty’s acting career. The neo-noir action thriller film was a commercial success at the box office. Written by Dennis Joseph, directed by Joshiy and produced by Joy Thomas, the movie also stars Suresh Gopi, Thiagarajan, Sumalatha, Urvashi, Siddique, Vijayaraghavan, Mohan Jose, Devan, and Jagannatha Varma.

Mrugaya (1989)

Mrugaya is a drama film written by A K Lohithadas and directed by I V Sasi with Mammootty and Sunitha in the lead roles. It tells the story of Varunni (played by Mammootty), the uncivilised and drunkard hunter, who arrives in the village to kill a man-eating leopard. The film also stars Thilakan, Jagathy Sreekumar, Lalu Alex and Urvashi in supporting roles.

Thazhvaram (1990)

Thazhvaram is a thriller directed by Bharathan and written by M T Vasudevan Nair. It stars Mohanlal, Salim Ghouse, Sumalatha, Anju and Sankaradi. Set in the backdrop of a remote village in Palakkad, it tells the story of Balan, the protagonist played by Mohanlal, who wants to take revenge on Raju (Salim Ghouse) for murdering his wife Raji (Anju). The movie was both a critical and commercial success.

Kireedam (1989)

Kireedam is an intense action-drama film by Sibi Malayil and written by A K Lohithadas. This was one of the most successful films of actor Mohanlal. Kireedam is the story of a young man who is pulled into a world of violence accidentally during an attempt to save his policeman father from a gangster. The film also stars Thilakan, Parvathy, Kaviyoor Ponnamma, Mohan Raj, Murali, Sreenath, Kundara Johny, Cochin Haneefa, Jagathy Sreekumar, Philomina, Usha, Jagadish, Maniyanpilla Raju, Mamukkoya, Oduvil Unnikrishnan, and Kanakalatha in supporting roles.
