For woman travellers in Kerala, finding a clean public toilet is always a big challenge. But now Kerala has found a solution to the problem. A new mobile application called “Kloo” (short for Kerala Loo) is being developed to help travellers and the general public locate the nearest hygienic toilet anywhere in the state with just a few taps on their smartphone.
Kerala government has decided to develop the app recognising the growing need for more accessible and well-maintained sanitation facilities for women travellers who usually find it difficult to access clean toilets. A senior government official said the app aims to bridge this gap by bringing together toilets that are part of both public and private establishments — including hotels, restaurants, and other institutions — under a single digital platform.
“Once launched, the app will allow users to find the closest clean toilet using real-time location data. Each listed toilet will feature details such as operating hours, cleanliness ratings, and directions on an interactive map. Importantly, users themselves can rate and review the facilities they use, ensuring a system of accountability and continuous improvement,” the official said.
The project is part of the state’s Waste-Free New Kerala initiative spearheaded by the Local Self-Government Department (LSGD). It is being implemented by the Suchitwa Mission in collaboration with the Kerala Hotel and Restaurant Association (KHRA).
Officials say that in addition to promoting sanitation and public convenience, the app will also benefit participating establishments. Each registered hotel or restaurant will have its profile featured on the app, highlighting its signature dishes, food items, and amenities. This integration is expected to attract more visitors to these establishments while encouraging them to maintain high standards of hygiene. The app will soon be available for both Android and iOS platforms, and the registration process for hotels, restaurants, and other establishments offering toilet facilities will begin shortly.
